Roma v Catania: a bit of history

Roma v Catania: a bit of history

The first meeting was played in Serie B sixty years ago, 13 June 1952, and was played in Sicily (a 1-0 win for the Giallorossi with a goal from Tre Re). On 8 June in the same year, however, Catania played for the first time in Rome, and indeed on that occasion, it was the home side who came out on top with goals from Galli, Zecca and Sundqvist. Since then there have been 31 meetings between Roma and the Sicilian side. The Giallorossi have won 16, drawn 11 and lost four. Roma have scored 66 goals compared to Catania’s 34. The side from Trigoria have had the better of things at the Stadio Olimpico. From 15 meetings at home Roma have won 13, drawn two, and remain undefeated. One of the most memorable games in the capital was on 11 April 1971, a 5-0 home victory, with Zigoni (2), Amarildo, Vieri and Cappellini the goalscorers. A rout, but nothing in comparison to Roma 7-0 Catania, doubles from Panucci and Perrotta, and goals from Mancini, Totti and Montella. The same Montella, part of the 2001 title-winning side, who will be on the opposite bench tomorrow night (20:45) in his role as boss of the Rossoazzurri.
